Twenty years after the release of her debut album, the Korean jazz vocalist assumes full responsibility for all the song writing on her 2022 album Waking World. According to her, it just turned out like that because there was no other way: writing offered a path out of the darkness and stagnation so many of us experienced during the pandemic. Up until now she didn’t identify as a composer, but rather as an interpreter of other people’s songs – like those of Leonard Cohen or Marvin Gaye on her 2019 album Immersion. Her eleven new pieces tie together all the genres that have repeatedly popped up in her work until now; be it jazz, pop, folk and world music or entire cinematographic and highly poetic worlds. The brand-new repertoire is presented by her newly assembled quartet, consisting of Brad Christopher Jones (bass), Thomas Naïm (guitar) and Tony Paeleman (keys).
