“Watching his splendid quartet is an experience of pure joy,” wrote one blogger in June 2015 about a concert by Verneri Pohjola. At the sixth ELBJAZZ Festival, the Finnish trumpeter delighted the media and the general public at Blohm+Voss. Pohjola now returns with his perfectly attuned band. While his previous album was a fusion/jazz/rock tribute to his late father, The Dead Don’t Dream has a sharper focus on acoustic sounds and open improvisations. The 42-year-old Finn will perform in an intimate setting at ELBJAZZ shortly after the release of the new album. He loves bop, soul jazz, Nordic folk and even progressive rock – all of which is reflected in his inimitably soft sound. And, of course, the famous Scandinavian melancholy is also a constant presence in Verneri Pohjola’s art.
