The Berlin-based sextet The Premier is all about the funk and soul sound of the Sixties and Seventies. With a repertoire covering everything from love songs such as Donny Hathaway’s “Hey Girl” and social critique such as Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album to groovy deep cuts by James Brown or Sharon Jones and her Dap-Kings, The Premier are not so interested in faithfully reproducing the original songs as they are in authentically reviving the feeling and the sound aesthetic of an era. At the Elbjazz Festival, Leon Mamic (vocals), Niklas Stadler (guitar), Max Jansen (electric piano), Joshua Weiß (drums), Dominik Witte (percussion) and Patrick Orlich (bass) are accompanied by the former Roger Cicero arranger and band leader Lutz Krajenski on the Hammond organ, whose sound – alongside the 6/8 grooves so typical of the genre – epitomises the golden era of soul.
