Now having passed his 80, modern jazz legend Ron Carter looks back at 2,000+ albums he has been involved in, making him one of the most-recorded bass players in music history – with a spectrum that ranges from Miles Davis to A Tribe Called Quest. One of Carter’s favourite formations is the Golden Striker Trio, which currently features Donald Vega on piano and Russell Malone on the guitar. With this trio, the quiet American explores the classic repertoire of the Great American Songbook, for example My Funny Valentine, which he approaches with a perfect balance of minimalism, intuitive sensitivity and stylistically confident restraint. The piece by John Lewis from which the trio takes its name also features in their repertoire, along with Carter’s own elegant compositions, which further consolidate his reputation as the elder statesman of the double bass. Great art in soft tones!
