Ron Carter, the grand seigneur of the jazz double bass with the sleek, elegant and stylishly somnambulistic sound, was a latecomer to the big band scene: he was nearing 75 years of age before he put together Ron Carter’s Great Big Band, his first large ensemble. He enjoyed that experience so much that he soon dove in to his next big band adventure. The result is My Personal Songbook, a recording of those compositions of his that, in his six-decade musical career, have been most important to him – which he now presents in big band form. With these orchestral arrangements, Carter once again finds the perfect double bass sound, which he – with his legendary sensitivity, unfailing elegance and soothing coolness – celebrates both during the ensemble parts and solo passages.
