The series “Babylon Berlin” gripped viewers not just with its thrilling plot and amazing costumes, but also with its 1920s-style music. The title song “Zu Asche, zu Staub” performed by Severija Janušauskaitė, in particular, has left a mark on pop-cultural collective memory. Since then, the Moka Efti Orchestra – the series’ original big band – has been inundated with requests for performances. Together with singer Severija, the 14-strong ensemble around the composers Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien and saxophonist and arranger Sebastian Borkowski not only evokes the spirit of the Golden Twenties through sound – they also acoustically bring back to life a prominent setting in the series, the legendary “Moka Efti,” which led a double life in the Berlin of the Weimar Republic: A café during the day, at night it was transformed into the metropolis’ most popular dance hall. Let’s swing!
