Michael Wollny Trio

As soon as the name Michael Wollny is mentioned, the superlatives come out. The Times called the band of the likeable Leipzig musician “the most exciting piano trio in Europe” and for FAZ, “in any world ranking of jazz pianists, Wollny would have to be in the top three.” The eight-times Echo Award winner has already performed at ELBJAZZ numerous times, delighting audiences both in the Elbphilharmonie and on the open-air stage. Wollny now returns with a new album, which once again pays no heed whatsoever to traditional genre expectations. Ghosts includes barely recognisable versions of familiar songs from the worlds of classical, jazz and pop – you won’t find a more innovative deconstruction of Gershwin’s “I Loves You Porgy” in a hurry. The brilliant pianist will carry everyone away if only they’re open to it. Nick Cave and Schubert, groove and minimalism – this trio has mastered it all.
