Michael Wollny Trio

Germany Jazz, Piano

2018 was Michael Wollny’s year. In March, the Leipzig-based pianist released two critically acclaimed albums at the same time, and he was the first-ever Artist in Residence at ELBJAZZ. He gave three brilliant concert performances in the Elbphilharmonie and there were a lot of disappointed fans when his open-air gig had to be cancelled due to heavy thunderstorms. Now in 2019 he finally plays that show with his rousing trio as promised.

Wollny is one of the leading European jazz musicians of his generation. Public and critical acclaim are never far behind when the man with the distinctive mop of hair performs. He has won eight Echo Jazz Awards and is known as a technically outstanding musician, but it is the sensitivity of his darkly romantic songs, above all else, that make them so mesmerising. At the same time, this “consummate master of the piano” (FAZ) has irresistible grooves down to a fine art, and he also delivers electrifying cover versions of Björk and Kraftwerk.
