Michael Wollny Trio
To attend this Elbphilharmonie concert, reservations must be made in advance.
The 39 year-old pianist Michael Wollny is one of the most phenomenal musicians on his instrument and is rated among the few German jazz musicians with the title “world class”. Wollny has been classically trained, so he knows as much about Gustav Mahler as he knows about Thelonious Monk. During the past years he has once and again taken artistic risks: He leads his own trio, he appears solo, he makes music in a duet with the French accordionist Vincent Peirani or the saxophone player Heinz Sauer. Also, he has taken part in countless all-star concerts with colleagues of the ACT-label where his albums are released. His concerts are revelations with a string of magical moments. Wollny has the ability to produce highly romantic sounds and abruptly engage in a wild frenzy tormenting the keys in the best manner of free jazz artists because he doesn’t know any limitations.
In his current trio he plays together with the drummer Eric Schaefer, with whom he’s had a long-standing cooperation and the bass player Christian Weber. His last album with this trio was “Nachtfahrten”, which was released in October 2015, and the next one has been announced for March 2018.
