Lucky are those who can transform adversity into great art. New Jersey-born singer Melody Gardot suffered a serious accident as a teenager that left her oversensitive to light and sound – her path to recovery involved music therapy. She has since released five very different, widely acclaimed albums. Critics have described her songs as “breath-taking” and “inspired”. From jazz and gospel to swing, pop and folk – Gardot, who has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, masters all these styles with sophisticated elegance. Her most recent album “Sunset in the Blue” features Brazilian bossa nova and jazz standards in English, French and Portuguese. Deutschlandfunk Kultur called it “captivating”. “Blues is not a style, it’s a feeling”, says the exceptional singer – no one demonstrates that more authentically than her.
