Lisa Wulff’s first quartet album Encounters (2016) earned the Hamburg bass player a nomination for the ECHO Jazz Award. Despite a variety of projects as a sidewoman, including for Rolf Kühn, and her work with the NDR Bigband, she has never forgotten the focus on the Lisa Wulff Quartet. After Wondrous Strange (2018) and Beneath the Surface (2020), the quartet released its fourth album Sense and Sensibility in 2021, on which Wulff plays her double bass and a guitar-like soprano bass, as well as sings – including an interpretation of Norah Jones’s “Don’t Know Why”. At the ELBJAZZ Festival, the acclaimed formation will be performing in a changed line-up, with Frank Chastenier on the piano. He adds a new facet to the quartet sound, bringing with him as he does more than a quarter of a century’s experience playing with the WDR Big Band in Cologne. Creative jazzman Gabriel Coburger on the saxophone and drummer Valentin Renner, who also plays with the Jazzrausch Bigband, add charming and idiosyncratic details to Wulff’s compositions, sending the quartet on a new journey of adventure.
