Ever since the Berlin-based quartet won the Young Jazz Prize at the Burghausen International Jazz Week in 2018, the Ukrainian singer, actor and band leader Viktoria Leléka has captivated a wider audience with her personality and full, soft voice. Leléka is joined by the passionate jazz musicians Thomas Kolarczyk (bass), Jakob Hegner (percussion) and Povel Widestrand (piano), for whom Anna Wohlfahrt is filling in at ELBJAZZ Festival. Together, they take a contemporary chamber-music approach to the melodious folk songs of Anton’s homeland, all on a foundation of free improvisation. The band’s name means “stork”, which in Ukraine symbolises spring and a new happiness – and which has gained a new relevance in spring 2022. In these works, we encounter not only folk-like figures such as lazy men and cunning women, but also the victims of a long war.
