Knollektiv is a Hamburg-based quintet dedicated to modern European jazz led by the trumpeter Johannes Knoll. The band loves to put familiar melodies, motifs and styles in new contexts, with free jazz meeting Stravinsky, and Billy Joel meeting John Coltrane. This contrast also finds its equivalent in the collective sound shaped by Paul Beskers on alto saxophone, Tim Scherer on piano, Henning Schiewer on double bass and Henning Katz on drums. The sound highlights the diverse musical backgrounds of the protagonists as a stylistic device, as demonstrated in elaborate pieces such as “Der Urinstinkt” – in which a striking fanfare-like element rallies everybody together, only for them to drift apart, and then be brought in sync again repeatedly by whichever musician is currently in charge of the process of establishing unity.
