Jazzanova (live) & DJ Amir
For their latest collaboration, the DJ-and-producer collective Jazzanova from Berlin and Amir Abdullah aka DJ Amir, a New York DJ and label owner, took on Strata Records’ repertoire, and reinterpreted it under the title The Sound of Detroit. Unlike the iconic Motown record label, which is also based in Detroit, the indie label Strata, which was active in the first half of the 1970s, has attracted little attention until now. Amir’s label 180-Proof Records has set out to change this. Since 2011 they have been gradually publishing Strata’s back catalogue and unpublished material. On eleven hand-picked tracks, concentrated DJ power breathes new life into the sound of the obscure avant-garde jazz label, which was characterized by its use of the Mellotron and ambient strings and flute arrangements – not just as a remixer, but above all as a musician and record collector, encountering the heritage of the past with sensitivity and respect. A nine-strong band will perform the pieces, which were believed to be lost, live to a new generation of music lovers.
