In the 2010s, Angus Stone performed with his sister as an acoustic guitar duo – but he is now turning up the amplifiers. The 36-year-old Australian musician owns a ranch just south of Brisbane. In the converted barn there, he grouped his instruments around the fireplace and got the whisky ready. The result was Rose Pink Cadillac, the third album of his Dope Lemon project. “The coolest cat in Australia” blends relaxed synth sounds with surf guitars, along with plenty of reverb and a good dose of groovy indie-pop. Music for cruising slowly to the beach in a rusty cabrio. “Europe is our jungle that we like hanging out in”, says Angus about his summer concerts. Whatever that means, Dope Lemon’s slacker-psychedelic sound gets us dreaming of sweltering tropical nights.
