Dominique Fils-Aimé certainly has self-confidence: before releasing her debut album she’d already announced that it was to be the first part of a trilogy on the theme of Afro-American history and culture. Part two was released recently: having explored blues in the first album, Stay Tuned! focuses on jazz. Like her sisters in spirit Melanie de Biasio and Melody Gardot, the French–Canadian singer with Haitian roots has a broadly formulated understanding of the genre appellation. Folk, gospel, soul and minimalist R’n’B all intermingle here, and the instrumental accompaniment is always reduced to the essential. And above everything, the voice of the woman from Montréal glides with a cool nonchalance, the power of her expression multiplied using loops. The trilogy will soon be completed with an album dedicated to funk and hip-hop – we are very excited to discover in which guise Dominique Fils-Aimé will appear at ELBJAZZ in June.
