“Synth-pop meets jazz” is a popular, but far too one-dimensional a description for the fabulous genre mix this young British quartet has been producing since 2010. The band leader and head songwriter is 29-year-old trumpeter Laura Jurd, who also knows how to present her complex songs live. She can often be seen playing the synthesizer with her left hand and the trumpet with her right. Dinosaur’s third album will be released in 2020 and there is every reason to be excited: Will the four “world-class musicians” (The Standard) play more of their trippy cool jazz, taking an occasional detour in the direction of fusion funk, only to finally – after some Celtic vocal harmonies – take a turn towards 80s pop? How the band blends all this without sounding overloaded remains their secret. It’s enough to make even grandmasters like Snarky Puppy turn pale.
