Clara Lucas & Hauke Renken with Strings
The duo, with Clara Lucas singing and Hauke Renken on the vibraphone, is accompanied by six string players for their latest programme “Green”. For listeners not set on any genre and who appreciate the playful and the serious in equal measure, the unusual line-up delivers the duo’s favourite jazz standards, combined with interpretations of songs by Stevie Wonder and Jacob Collier. At times their music is reminiscent of the melancholy of Billie Holiday, at other times of the power of Melody Gardot or the valour and ostentatiousness of Richard Wagner – a spectrum that encompasses the duo’s influences as reflected in their own compositions. Lucas earned her musical spurs at Germany’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra. She has since sung with the 12-strong Scandinavian vocal ensemble Touché and is the lead singer of the space-funk combo Tilar. Renken, who is also responsible for the string arrangements, studied with David Friedman and holds a scholarship from the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Berlin e.V. association.
