Those who love Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters will definitely like Butcher Brown. Concealed behind this name is a quintet from Richmond/Virginia around the trumpeter and saxophone player Marcus Tenney. The five Americans play a sweeping and danceable funk jazz which reminds us of the 70s but is yet rather hip.

The underground band has already released half a dozen records. The current one is titled “Camden Session” (Gearboy Records/Edel) and was recorded live. The compositions contain very catchy riffs but the band members also offer brilliant soli like their keyboarder DJ Harrison in “Street Pharmacy”. Guitarist Morgan Burrs is a real virtuoso in mastering the wah-wah-pedal, and the rhythm section, Andrew Ranazzo (bass) and Corey Fonville (drums) , are putting out the soundscape for the soloists with their bone dry and rolling beats.
