Awarding the Hamburg Jazzpreis to Silvan Strauß
When it comes to jazz, there’s a lot going on in Hamburg – jazz has a long tradition in the city and is home to a lively and colourful scene that takes its inspiration from various musical cultures and sources. The vitality of the scene is evident in over 100 concerts every month, where the local scene welcomes guests, sessions take place and genres mix. Some outstanding musicians live, work and study in Hamburg.
The Hamburg Jazz Prize, which is worth €10,000, is awarded every two years to musicians who have made a particularly distinctive artistic contribution to jazz music in Hamburg and who are committed to the interests of jazz in the city.
The Hamburg Jazz Prize was established in 2007 by the Dr. E. A. Langner Foundation. Sponsorship was transferred to ELBJAZZ GmbH in 2011. Jazzbüro Hamburg took over organisation of the prize in 2017, while ELBJAZZ still hosts the award ceremony. A specialist jury first nominated candidates and then selected the prize winners for 2021:
the drummer Silvan Strauß is the winner of this prestigious prize, which was awarded for the eighth time.
Following on from the ceremony for the award of the Hamburg Jazz Prize, Silvan Strauß will be performing his prize winner’s concert with the NDR Bigband.
