A new generation of London beatmakers discovers jazz. One of the figures on this up-and-coming scene is Alfa Mist, who earned his musical stripes as a grime and hip-hop producer before teaching himself how to play the piano. The North-Londoner went on to study the works of his idols, which include Miles Davis and Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer. No surprise then that Alfa Mist’s debut EP Nocturne,a jazz-inspired flirt with trip-hop, neo-soul and spoken word, is also reminiscent of an enchanted soundtrack.
On his latest album Antiphon, jazzy harmonies and rich soul textures are combined with intricate hip-hop beats to create a luxurious blend that emphasises the shared roots of the genres. The great soul-jazz mogul Quincy Jones hit the nail on the head when he said that if you’re really into jazz, there’s no way you can dislike hip-hop!
