A Portrait Of Esbjörn Svensson

Jazz

When pianist Esbjörn Svensson died in a scuba diving accident on 14 June 2008, it was also the end of one of the greatest success stories in European jazz. The Esbjörn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.) propelled the piano trio format to unparalleled popularity in jazz, especially among a broad, young audience for whom it often constituted the first contact with the jazz genre. Today, ten years after Svensson’s death and the end of e.s.t., the influence of Svensson and his trio on contemporary jazz is unmistakeable. The documentary “A Portrait of Esbjörn Svensson” offers an unprecedented look at Esbjörn Svensson, both the man and the musician. This is the first time that the film, originally produced for Swedish television, is being shown in Germany.
