Born is Alaska, raised in Seattle, a studio star in L.A.: the singer, keyboarder, and harmonica-ace Tollak Ollestad has already performed with colleagues such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Dave and Don Grusin, Al Jarreau, Cyrus Chestnut, or Seal. His harmonica-playing is often compared to that of Stevie Wonder. Thank you, Butterscotch, for this nice Video!
If you have seen the award-winning West Coast beatboxer stirring up the Chick Corea trio, or experienced her sensational appearance on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” or her live-performance with Stevie Wonder – then you will believe her capable of becoming the talk of the town at ELBJAZZ. And as Chick Corea will not be at the piano this time, Butterscotch will sit down at his instrument in order to present us her version of “My Funny Valentine”.

The pianist, who at ELBJAZZ can also be heard with Viktoria Tolstoy (see there), is a master of the art of increasing suspense: unrestrained, initially skillfully restrained energy is the trio’s trademark. It is rare that delicate sounds and grooves, explosion and complete silence stand in such a close relationship. Percussion prodigy Alfred Vogel from Vorarlberg/Austria will present his “Vogelperspektive” (“bird’s eye view”) live in Hamburg as an ELBJAZZ exclusive. The widely travelled drummer, producer and organizer presents five open minded musical exchanges with his favorite musicians. Successfull experiment: “Robert Glasper is the first Jazz pianist with such deep Hip Hop roots that he can bring these congenial but entirely different musical stlyes authentically together“, says German magazine Jazz thing. The Texan who already played with Roy Hargrove, Erykah Badu or Meshell Ndegeocello will perform at ELBJAZZ with his futuristic “Robert Glasper Experiment” – and the music of his brand new album “Black Radio”.
Mastermind of this British-German sextet is pianist and arranger Colin Towns. Well known in Hamburg for his many projects for the NDR Bigband – like the “Harbour Symphony”, perfomed in 2011 at ELBJAZZ. His new band “Blue Touch Paper” is something completely different. Fearlessly they tackle even jazz-rock or the Canterbury Scene: “Melodies, rhythms and harmonies from all over the world and all eras are allowed to join in the conversation“ (stern.de) …
Danzon, Son Montuno, Guaguancó, Mambo und Guajira – the classics of Cuban music are alive and well thanks to Juan de Marcos González and his Afro-Cuban All Stars. The 57-year-old singer, composer and “Tresero” established his ensemble in 1995 – and layed the foundation for the “Buena Vista Social Club”. His current ensemble consists of old legends as well as some of the best youngsters of the Caribbean island.
